Freshman Year Mission

As a student attending high school for the first time, my mission is to make many new friends and find who I am along the way. My goals going into the school year are to make the soccer team and maintain a 4.2 GPA. I plan to grow and mature exponentially this year through many experiences and life lessons.

Freshman students in the CIBACS program all participate in the Gateway project. In this project, students are placed in teams of four and given a business partner. The business partners are typically local restaurants or food chains. The team of students must research the ins and outs of their partner's business to devise a SWOT analysis and target market related documents. They will then use the information they gathered to propose a moving plan to a new country. Students must find a real location in the country with a reasonable price and a convenient location for customers. Finally, students present their moving plan to their business partner and a panel of judges, with an audience filled with friends and families.

My team at International Business Moving Services (IBMS) was assigned Lamppost Pizza, which is a popular restaurant for pizza parties and family gatherings. Our task was to open a location in Poland. We researched Lamppost Pizza and Poland, then compared their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). After further research, we met with Jonny Bordan and Mr. Barro of Lamppost Pizza to ask valuable questions. We combined our notes from the meeting with our research to create a final plan for opening a location in Poland.

Disclaimer: Just as we were finalizing our product, the school was shut down due to COVID-19, and we did not get the opportunity to present in person.

As a freshman in the CIBACS program, there are many things to learn. The most important is formal business writing. Teams wrote documents analyzing the market such as our SWOT reports and 4 Ps. We even learned how to write formal thank you letters. During this project, I realized that I had instinctual leadership abilities, which I never noticed before. Although I was not a perfect leader, I found myself directing my team to understand my ideas and methodologies. My team and I worked very well together and we divided each assignment so that each team member did an equal amount. As a leader, I also combined the pieces into a whole and checked them to ensure they fit together. My team and I had a great time learning about applying real-world data to solve business problems.
